This just happened to me on July 19th, after downloading the latest desktop 26.04 to USB and installing it on a fresh SSD on a new machine. After my first apt update and then reboot, my machine had `gnome-session` instead of `gnome-session --session=gnome-login` on the `Exec` line of `/usr/share/gdm/greeter/wayland-sessions/gnome-greeter.desktop` This really shut me down for a long long time until I figured out I could ctrl-alt-F2 to get a tty login in order to debug it.
