Public bug reported:
After the freerdp3 update from 3.24.2+dfsg-1ubuntu1 to
3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.26.04.1
(resolute-updates/resolute-security, installed 2026-07-21), clipboard sharing
between
a Windows RDP client (mstsc) and GNOME Remote Desktop stopped working in both
directions. Screen sharing and input keep working; only the clipboard channel is
affected.
Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (resolute)
Affected package: libfreerdp3-3 / libwinpr3-3 / libfreerdp-server3-3
3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.26.04.1
Working version: 3.24.2+dfsg-1ubuntu1
gnome-remote-desktop: 50.0-0ubuntu2 (Wayland session, GNOME 50)
Client: Windows mstsc, connecting to a QEMU/KVM guest
What happens: on every RDP connection the cliprdr server thread dies immediately
after channel negotiation, and every subsequent clipboard operation times out.
Relevant journal excerpt (journalctl --user -u gnome-remote-desktop):
[RDP.CLIPRDR] Client capabilities: long format names, stream file clip,
file clip no file paths, can lock clip data, huge file support
[ERROR][com.freerdp.utils.ChannelPduTracker] - [ChannelPduTracker_poll]:
chunk size 14382 is too big
[ERROR][com.freerdp.channels.cliprdr.server] - [cliprdr_server_thread]:
CheckEventHandle failed with error 13!
[RDP.CLIPRDR] Possible protocol violation: Client did not send format data
response (Timeout reached)
[RDP.CLIPRDR] Possible protocol violation: Client did not send format data
response (Timeout reached)
... (repeats on every clipboard attempt)
The "chunk size ... is too big" value varies per connection (observed 14382,
2220),
which suggests the new strict virtual-channel chunk validation introduced in
FreeRDP 3.x (ChannelPduTracker) rejects PDUs that mstsc actually sends on the
clipboard channel, killing the channel thread (error 13 = ERROR_INVALID_DATA).
Steps to reproduce:
1. Ubuntu 26.04 with gnome-remote-desktop (Desktop Sharing) enabled, freerdp3
3.30.0
2. Connect from Windows with mstsc (clipboard redirection enabled)
3. Try to copy/paste text in either direction
Expected: clipboard content is transferred.
Actual: nothing is pasted; journal shows the errors above.
Regression: downgrading libfreerdp3-3, libwinpr3-3 and libfreerdp-server3-3 to
3.24.2+dfsg-1ubuntu1 (and restarting gnome-remote-desktop) fully restores
clipboard functionality with the same client and settings.
Note: apport may report the installed package version as 3.24.2 because the
affected libraries are currently downgraded and held on this machine as a
workaround; the bug is in 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.26.04.1.
