Public bug reported:
Environment
- Ubuntu Server 24.04.4 LTS (Noble)
- Package: bolt 0.9.7-1
- Intel Alder Lake-P Thunderbolt 4 controller
- Beelink EQi12 Pro (BIOS EQI12D405)
Problem
bolt.service always fails immediately after boot.
The journal consistently reports:
bolt 0.9.7 starting up.
manager: initializing store
store: located at: /var/lib/boltd
could not create manager: failed to parse '' as unsigned integer
The service then exits with:
status=5/TRAP
Observations
- Thunderbolt hardware is correctly detected by the kernel.
- The thunderbolt kernel driver is loaded.
- Two Thunderbolt/USB4 domains are present.
- /var/lib/boltd/version exists but is an empty (0-byte) file.
- No Thunderbolt devices are attached.
Additional information
While investigating, I noticed that the upstream changelog for bolt
0.9.10 mentions:
"Fix bolt exits when opening an empty version file"
This appears to be closely related to the behaviour observed on Ubuntu
24.04 with bolt 0.9.7, although I cannot confirm that it is the same
root cause.
Expected behaviour
bolt.service should start successfully even when no Thunderbolt devices
are connected.
Actual behaviour
bolt.service crashes immediately during startup and systemd repeatedly
attempts to restart it.
