Public bug reported:
On my HP 14s-fq2xxx laptop (AMD Ryzen 5 5625U, Barcelo/Renoir platform,
Realtek ALC236 HD-Audio codec), the external microphone connected via
the 3.5mm combo jack is never recognized as an available input device in
PipeWire/ALSA, even though the hardware and codec are correctly probed
by the kernel.
Hardware:
Laptop: HP 14s-fq2xxx
CPU/APU: AMD Ryzen 5 5625U (Barcelo)
Audio codec: Realtek ALC236 (Vendor ID 0x10ec0236, Subsystem ID 0x103c89fe)
PCI device: 0000:03:00.6 (analog codec); 0000:03:00.1 is the separate HDMI/DP
audio controller
WiFi: Realtek RTL8822CE (unrelated, for reference)
Software environment:
OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Kernel: (run uname -r and paste here)
Audio stack: PipeWire 1.6.2 + WirePlumber
Expected behavior:
When a headset/microphone is plugged into the 3.5mm combo jack, the "Stereo
Microphone" input should be reported as available and selectable in Settings >
Sound > Input, and should function as it does natively in Windows on the same
hardware (dual-boot confirmed working).
Actual behavior:
The device is correctly detected by the kernel driver at boot: dmesg shows
snd_hda_codec_alc269 hdaudioC1D0: autoconfig for ALC236: ... inputs: Mic=0x19.
The device appears in pactl list sources and wpctl status as "Ryzen HD Audio
Controller Stereo Microphone", but is permanently marked:
[In] Mic2: Stereo Microphone (type: Mic, priority: 200, availability group:
Mic, not available)
It never becomes "available" regardless of whether the headset is physically
plugged in or not.
As a result, it does not appear as a selectable input in GNOME Settings > Sound.
The associated 3.5mm headphone output (sink) on the same combo jack does
correctly report jack presence and works normally after a manual pin-config fix
(see below), confirming the physical jack, contacts, and combo-jack detection
circuitry are healthy — this appears to be a driver/quirk-level issue specific
to the microphone pin sensing, not a hardware fault.
The same physical headset microphone works correctly in Windows on this same
machine.
Steps to reproduce:
Boot the laptop into Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
Plug a working headset (confirmed functional in Windows) into the 3.5mm combo
jack.
Run wpctl status or pactl list sources.
Observe that "Stereo Microphone" is listed but remains marked "not available".
Workarounds already attempted (all unsuccessful):
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi — no change.
options snd-hda-intel jackpoll_ms=100 — jack-detect for the headphone output
improved (hot-plug now works reliably), but microphone availability was
unaffected.
Manual pin configuration override via patch= file targeting pin 0x19 (0x19
0x03a11020 instead of the default 0x19 0x04a11020) — no change to mic
availability, though this same technique did fix the headphone-output hot-plug
issue.
hdajackretask (alsa-tools-gui): selected codec Realtek ALC236, enabled Override
on pin 0x19 ("Black Mic, Right side"), set Jack detection to "Present",
installed boot override, rebooted — mic remained "not available".
Disabled snd_hda_intel power_save (power_save=0) — no change.
Additional notes:
The initial autoconfig fixup name is empty in dmesg: ALC236: picked fixup for
PCI SSID 103c:0000 (note the blank fixup name and generic/incomplete SSID
103c:0000, rather than the board's actual subsystem ID 103c:89fe). This
suggests the kernel is not matching this board to a specific, correct quirk
table entry.
/proc/asound/card1/codec#0 reports Invalid AFG subtree even though dmesg shows
successful autoconfig — this may be unrelated/a separate proc-interface quirk,
included here for completeness.
This appears related to (but distinct from) other known ALC236 issues such as
Launchpad bug #2038743 ("No sound from ALC236 upon warm boot") and bug #2142994
("Internal microphone not working on HP 15-fc0xxx"), which affect the same
codec family on other HP/AMD boards but with different symptoms (recording
silence vs. complete unavailability). #alc236, #hda, #microphone, #hp, #amd
