Thank you Pavel, that seems to have fixed the connection problem, but
Evolution and Sylpheed are still failing to pick up any mail (thought it
may just mean that Thunderbird on the Windows computer is wiping it off
the servers, contrary to its instructions, though I don't think so, it
all seems to be there when I access through the pop access) . Evolution
crashed and called for a report (which it hasn't been doing) and
something called compiz also promptly decided to crash and report to
the bug-tracking system, and the printer is also still processing or
failing to function.
