Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, amd64

Hardware: GMKtec NucBox G3S, Intel N95, 8 GB RAM

Package versions:

- gdm3 50.1-0ubuntu0.1
- gnome-shell 50.1-0ubuntu1.1
- gnome-session-bin 50.1-0ubuntu0.1
- ubuntu-session 50.1-0ubuntu0.1
- mutter-common 50.1-0ubuntu2.2

Summary:

Automatic login works correctly on a fresh Ubuntu 26.04 installation
with gdm3 50.0-0ubuntu1. After applying the official updates, which
upgrade gdm3 to 50.1-0ubuntu0.1, GDM successfully opens the automatic
user session on tty2 but starts a second greeter on tty1 approximately
60 seconds later. The greeter becomes active and displays a password
prompt even though the automatic user session is still running.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Perform a clean installation of Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.
2. Create the user `godrivercheckin`.
3. Select automatic login in the Ubuntu installer.
4. Reboot and confirm that automatic login works with gdm3 50.0.
5. Run `sudo apt update` and `sudo apt full-upgrade -y`.
6. Reboot.
7. Wait approximately 60 seconds.

Expected result:

The `godrivercheckin` desktop remains active after automatic login, with
no password prompt or additional greeter.

Actual result:

GDM opens the automatic session successfully:

`pam_unix(gdm-autologin:session): session opened for user
godrivercheckin`

Approximately 60 seconds later, GDM opens another session:

`pam_unix(gdm-launch-environment:session): session opened for user gdm-
greeter`

Session state while the problem is visible:

- `godrivercheckin` user session is running on `seat0`, `tty2`, Wayland.
- `gdm-greeter` is running on `seat0`, `tty1`, Wayland.
- `tty1` is active.
- The `godrivercheckin` session remains online but inactive.

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 immediately reveals the correctly running
automatically logged-in desktop.

This happens on a clean installation before installing Chromium, kiosk
scripts, custom sessions, GNOME extensions, branding or third-party
packages.

The regression appears between:

- Working: gdm3 50.0-0ubuntu1
- Broken: gdm3 50.1-0ubuntu0.1
