Public bug reported:
The internal (built-in) microphone does not work on my Acer Extensa
215-23 laptop running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (kernel 7.0). The internal mic
worked correctly on Windows on the same machine, so the hardware is fine
— this appears to be a driver/codec-quirk issue on Linux.
Details:
- Laptop: Acer Extensa 215-23
- Codec: Realtek ALC256 (HD-Audio Generic)
- OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, kernel 7.0
- Audio server: PipeWire
What works / doesn't:
- External mic via headphone/USB jack: works fine
- Internal mic: detected by the kernel (arecord -l lists "ALC256 Analog"), not
muted, volume at 100%, but captures only silence
- Recording directly from hardware (arecord -D plughw:1,0 -vvv) shows the level
meter stays at 0% while speaking — no signal reaches the pin
What I already tried (none worked):
I tested these model= quirks via /etc/modprobe.d/, each with a reboot:
alc256-acer, alc255-acer, dell-headset-multi, laptop-dmic, alc256-asus. None
enabled the internal mic.
Could a pin-config quirk for the Acer Extensa 215-23 (ALC256) be added
so the internal microphone works out of the box? I'm happy to test any
patches or provide more information.
