Public bug reported:

If I build ghostscript from the original upstream source (actually the newer
version, ghostscript-10.07.1) then gs -h or gs -v
will display help or version information

Also, on the Ubuntu packaged version of ghostscript on noble, this also
works.

on resolute, the Ubuntu packaged version of ghostscript doesn't work
like documented for this.

What works:

# lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
Release: 24.04
Codename: noble
# /usr/bin/gs -v
GPL Ghostscript 10.02.1 (2023-11-01)
Copyright (C) 2023 Artifex Software, Inc. All rights reserved.

What doesnt work:
Exactly the same on resolute (26.04.4 LTS)

# lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Release: 26.04
Codename: resolute
# /usr/bin/gs -v
# echo $?
0

I found this bug whilst trying to work out why other functionality of
Ghostscript was failing under resolute with the standard packaged
versions.

** Affects: ghostscript (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
