Public bug reported:

During backup, rsync failed and USB drive would not unmount. Even with
drive not attached and machine rebooted, drive appears in Thunar or the
Disks app and will not unmount. Disks shows the USB drive as /dev/sdb,
there is no /dev/sdb. Apport hangs forever. Nothing happens when the
drive is re-inserted.

I have attached the Disks app image and dmesg output.
