UPDATE: found a working workaround: Adding i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=0 to the kernel command line restores working brightness control on kernel 7.0.0-28/29. This forces i915 to skip DPCD/AUX-channel backlight control entirely and fall back to the legacy native/PWM path.
