Description :
Package: linux-firmware-misc
Broken version: 20260319.git217ca6e4-0ubuntu2.2
Working version: 20260319.git217ca6e4-0ubuntu2
Ubuntu release: 26.04 "Resolute Raccoon"
Hardware:
- HP 15 Notebook PC
- AMD APU, Kabini generation (PCI ID 0x1002:0x9836), using the legacy
"radeon" kernel driver (not amdgpu)
- Wi-Fi: Realtek rtl8188ee
Symptom:
After upgrading linux-firmware-misc from 0ubuntu2 to 0ubuntu2.2 on
2026-08-11, the boot screen became illegible, showing corrupted
horizontal bars/lines across the display during the Plymouth splash
screen. The corruption could be temporarily cleared by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+Esc, which forces a VT refresh.
The kernel log shows no errors during radeon driver initialization
itself (all ring tests and ib tests pass), suggesting the issue is
related to firmware timing/content rather than a hard driver failure.
Workaround:
Downgrading to linux-firmware-misc 0ubuntu2 (still available in the
resolute/main pocket) and holding the package with `apt-mark hold`
completely resolves the visual corruption. No other changes were
needed.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install linux-firmware-misc 20260319.git217ca6e4-0ubuntu2.2 on
AMD Kabini hardware with the radeon driver
2. Reboot
3. Observe corrupted bars/lines on the Plymouth boot screen
Expected result: clean boot screen
Actual result: screen corruption with bars/lines until VT refresh
