Public bug reported:
SUMMARY
Selecting "Cinnamon on Wayland" at the GDM login screen reliably crashes
back to the greeter. Xwayland segfaults (signal 11, address 0x40) within
~1 second of session start, immediately after logging "Xwayland glamor:
GBM Wayland interfaces not available" / "Failed to initialize glamor,
falling back to sw". cinnamon-session-binary then reports the app
respawning too quickly and gives up.
Plain "Cinnamon" (X11) session is unaffected and works reliably.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. At the GDM3 greeter, select the user, click the gear icon, choose "Cinnamon
on Wayland".
2. Log in.
EXPECTED
Cinnamon desktop starts under Wayland.
ACTUAL
Session crashes back to the greeter within ~1 second, every time (100%
reproducible across at least 4 separate attempts on 2026-08-14).

NOTES
- Crash address (0x40) and backtrace/coredump frame offsets are identical
across every reproduction, suggesting a deterministic bug rather than a race
condition.
- libnvidia-egl-wayland.so.1 (egl-wayland 1:1.1.21-1) is loaded in the coredump
every time, though prime-select is set to "intel" (NVIDIA is not the active
renderer) in every reproduction — so this does not require NVIDIA to actually
be driving the display, just for the egl-wayland library to be present/loaded.
- Reproduced under nvidia-driver-595 (595.84) initially, and again after
upgrading to nvidia-driver-610 (610.43.02-0ubuntu0.26.04.1) — not fixed by the
driver bump.
- xwayland 2:24.1.10-1 and nvidia-driver-610 610.43.02-0ubuntu0.26.04.1 are
both already the latest candidates available from enabled repos (including
resolute-proposed) as of 2026-08-14.
- This is a separate issue from bug 2152848 (GDM leaking
XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland into X11 sessions), which is already fixed and covers
the plain X11 Cinnamon session.
WORKAROUND
Use plain "Cinnamon" (X11) at the GDM greeter instead of "Cinnamon on
Wayland".
