Public bug reported:
Release: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Package: nautilus 1:50.2.2-0ubuntu0.1 (also affects libgtk-4-1
4.22.4+ds-0ubuntu0.1)
What I expected to happen:
The GNOME Files (Nautilus) sidebar shows the standard rows: Home, Recent,
Starred, Network, Other Locations, Trash.
What happened instead:
The "Other Locations" row is completely missing from the sidebar. It should
normally appear between "Network" and "Trash", but the list jumps straight from
Network to Trash.
Troubleshooting already performed (no root cause found):
1. Restarted Nautilus (`nautilus -q` then relaunched) — issue persisted.
2. Checked dconf/gsettings for any override under org.gnome.nautilus and
org.gtk.gtk4.Settings.FileChooser — found nothing that controls or hides this
row (Nautilus enables it unconditionally via
gtk_places_sidebar_set_show_other_locations).
3. Verified GVfs and udisks2 backend services are all active and healthy
(gvfs-daemon, gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor, udisks2.service all running
normally; `gio mount -l` correctly lists drives).
4. Confirmed nautilus, libnautilus-extension4, and libgtk-4-1 are already at
the latest available versions (no pending updates via apt).
5. Launched nautilus from a terminal to capture stderr — no warnings or errors
related to the sidebar or places backend were logged.
Additional note: the window is currently maximized (dconf
org.gnome.nautilus window-state maximized=true) — have not yet tested
whether un-maximizing the window makes the row reappear, but flagging it
in case there's a layout-related regression in the GTK4 places sidebar
at certain window states/sizes.
This looks like a regression in the GTK4 places-sidebar rewrite used by
this Nautilus version rather than a local configuration issue, since
there is no user-facing setting that controls this row's visibility.
** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
