Public bug reported: 1) Release of Ubuntu
$ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS Release: 24.04 2) Version of the package $ apt-cache policy linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04: Installed: 7.0.0-29.29~24.04.2 Candidate: 7.0.0-29.29~24.04.2 $ apt-cache policy linux-image-7.0.0-29-generic linux-image-7.0.0-29-generic: Installed: 7.0.0-29.29~24.04.2 Candidate: 7.0.0-29.29~24.04.2 Source package: linux-signed-hwe-7.0 7.0.0-29.29~24.04.2 Running kernel: 7.0.0-29-generic Userspace: alsa-utils 1.2.9-1ubuntu5 pipewire 1.0.5-1ubuntu3.3 3) What I expected to happen The internal microphone records audio. Even with no sound in the room the capture stream should contain noise, that is non-zero samples. 4) What happened instead Every captured sample is zero, on both capture devices of the codec. This is not quiet audio, there is no non-zero sample at all in a 3 second recording, with Capture at 100% and Internal Mic Boost at maximum. $ arecord -D hw:2,0 -f S16_LE -r 48000 -c 2 -d 3 test.wav -> all zeros $ arecord -D hw:2,2 -f S16_LE -r 48000 -c 2 -d 3 test2.wav -> all zeros The same microphone works in Windows 11 on the same machine, so the hardware is fine. Playback through the same codec works, the speakers are fine. Hardware Model: Acer Nitro ANV16S-41 (Nitro V 16S AI) Board: HWK / BRZ_SKF BIOS: INSYDE V1.14, EC 1.8 CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 260, Radeon 780M Codec: Realtek ALC245, PCI SSID 1025:1969, codec SSID 0x10251969 HDA: 1022:15e3 at 0000:64:00.6, driver snd_hda_intel ACP: 1022:15e2 at 0000:64:00.5, driver snd_pci_ps Also affected: 7.0.0-28, 6.17.0-20, 6.17.0-14. Same result on all of them. Details autoconfig finds two internal inputs: snd_hda_codec_alc269 hdaudioC2D0: autoconfig for ALC245: line_outs=1 (0x14) type:speaker snd_hda_codec_alc269 hdaudioC2D0: hp_outs=1 (0x21) snd_hda_codec_alc269 hdaudioC2D0: inputs: snd_hda_codec_alc269 hdaudioC2D0: Internal Mic=0x12 snd_hda_codec_alc269 hdaudioC2D0: Internal Mic=0x13 Both pins are digital: Node 0x12 Pin Default 0x90a60130 [Fixed] Mic at Int, Conn = Digital Node 0x13 Pin Default 0x90a60140 [Fixed] Mic at Int, Conn = Digital The kernel picks a fixup with an empty name: snd_hda_codec_alc269 hdaudioC2D0: ALC245: picked fixup for PCI SSID 1025:0000 There is no model specific entry for this machine in patch_realtek. No ANV16 string exists in any module of 7.2-rc7 either, so a newer kernel will not help by itself. Seven fixups were tried through modelname plus reconfig in sysfs, each with a 3 second recording from both ADCs: no model, alc269-dmic, laptop-dmic, alc269vb-dmic, inv-dmic, alc2xx-fixup-headset-mic, alc255-acer. All of them returned zeros. The codec was restored to its original state afterwards. The microphones are not on the ACP. In ACPI only HDA0 (_ADR 1), I2SC (3), BTSC (4), SDWC (5), SDWS (6) and USBS (7) are declared under the ACP node, there is no _ADR 0x02 and therefore no DMIC device. AMDI0063 (SoundWire) has _STA=0. snd_pci_ps binds to 0000:64:00.5 and creates no card, with no error in the log. Windows shows the same picture: only DEVTYPE_0001, 0004 and 0007 under ACP, and the working microphone there is the HD Audio one, named "Microphone Array (Realtek(R) Audio)". The ACPI device set seen by Linux matches the one seen by Windows, so the firmware is not hiding devices based on _OSI. Updating the BIOS from V1.01 to V1.14 changed nothing. Codec GPIOs: three, all with enable=0. Playback works, so the speaker amplifier is not driven through them and they look unrelated. Also reported to [email protected]. Note about the attached apport report It was edited before upload. WifiSyslog, IwConfig, CRDA and RfKill were removed, and hostname, user name, MAC addresses and USB serial numbers were replaced with placeholders. Nothing audio related was changed.
