Indeed
mariadb on 24.04 (1:10.11.14-0ubuntu0.24.04.1) creates /var/lib/mysql
mariadb on 26.04 (1:11.8.6-5ubuntu0.1 ) creates /var/lib/mariadb
this has been documented in the mariadb package:
mariadb (1:11.8.6-5) unstable; urgency=medium
MariaDB's data directory now defaults to /var/lib/mariadb for new
installations to facilitate better co-installability between MariaDB and
MySQL servers. This change does not affect existing installations, which will
continue to use /var/lib/mysql.
The data directory location is determined by the mariadbd datadir config
option, which is now set to /var/lib/mariadb by default. For existing
installations using /var/lib/mysql, the datadir config option is enforced in
/etc/mysql/mariadb.conf.d/99-legacy-datadir.cnf.

You should have upgraded Ubuntu from 24.04 to 26.04 and still have data
in the old folder /var/lib/mysql
