I am experiencing a reproducible display failure on Ubuntu 24.04 with an
AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT.
I was able to isolate the problem to the linux-firmware package update
from 0ubuntu2.27 to 0ubuntu2.29.
Hardware
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT (Navi 21 / Sienna Cichlid)
GPU PCI ID: 1002:73bf
GPU subsystem: ASUS 1043:04fa
Kernel driver: amdgpu
Kernel: 7.0.0-28-generic
I restored a complete system snapshot taken before the problem occurred.
With linux-firmware 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.27 and kernel
7.0.0-28-generic the system boots and the graphical desktop works
normally.
From the known-working snapshot, I installed only the linux-firmware
update:
20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.27
↓
20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.29
I did not update the kernel or other graphics packages.
After rebooting, the graphical display failed.
The failure occurs around the transition into the graphical user
session. In previous occurrences I could reach the Ubuntu login screen,
enter my password, and then the display would become corrupted/black. On
one occurrence the desktop appeared partially, with approximately half
of the screen black, before freezing.
After installing linux-firmware 0ubuntu2.29, the failure was reproduced
again: the display became half grey/half black, followed by the monitor
losing signal and entering standby. The machine then requires a hard
reset because I cannot obtain a usable graphical display or console.
The 0ubuntu2.29 update contains a large number of AMDGPU firmware
changes, including DMCUB/display-related firmware updates.
Issue with a change in the update?
Going to restore a second time now....
