Ubuntu 24.04
After upgrading from kernel 7.0.0-28-generic to 7.0.0-30-generic, the
built-in Bluetooth adapter stopped working.
Hardware:
- Device: Ninkear M8
- Bluetooth USB device: 0489:e156
- Vendor: Foxconn / Hon Hai
- MediaTek Bluetooth chipset
- MediaTek MT7902 Wi-Fi adapter
Expected result:
Bluetooth should initialize normally, as it does with kernel 7.0.0-28-generic.
Actual result:
On kernel 7.0.0-30-generic, the Bluetooth service starts and hci0 is created,
but the controller fails to initialize.
Kernel log:
Bluetooth: hci0: Opcode 0x0c03 failed: -110
bluetoothctl show:
No default controller available
hciconfig -a shows hci0 in DOWN state with:
BD Address: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Features: 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
Regression:
- 7.0.0-28-generic: Bluetooth works correctly
- 7.0.0-30-generic: Bluetooth controller fails to initialize
Booting back into 7.0.0-28-generic immediately restores Bluetooth
functionality without any other changes.
The same custom DKMS btmtk module version 0.1 is installed for both
kernels.
The btusb module differs between the kernels:
7.0.0-28-generic:
srcversion: 350E67A893A3F652D5291CD
7.0.0-30-generic:
srcversion: 09DE902D1B04AF8DC44ACE3
The Bluetooth USB device 0489:e156 is already present in btusb.c and
handled as a MediaTek device:

Attempted troubleshooting:
- Restarting bluetooth.service
- Reloading btusb and btmtk modules
- Unbinding and rebinding the internal USB device
- Rebuilding and reinstalling the custom btmtk DKMS module
- Confirming the device is not blocked by rfkill
The issue persists on 7.0.0-30-generic and disappears immediately when
booting 7.0.0-28-generic.
This appears to be a regression between kernels 7.0.0-28-generic and
7.0.0-30-generic, possibly related to changes in btusb or the MediaTek
Bluetooth initialization path.
