Additional finding:

The original Ubuntu 26.04 I reported above had the whole OS (inc /boot)
on the same partition.

I have since created VMs and made the /boot on its own partition (this
is closer to the default partitioning), the rest of the OS is on an
additional partition. The issue _does not_ appear in this configuration.

I have tried to follow the process of shutdown to see what the file it
is Erroring on, but with no success.  From this new finding I am
guessing something is getting dismounted before it should?

Being a VM its a bit hard to mount a USB to get the logfile as the
message states :(
