Public bug reported:
On my HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-eu0xxx, the keyboard backlight works
in Windows but is not available on Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS.
No kbd_backlight device is exposed in /sys/class/leds/, so there is no
way to control the keyboard backlight from Linux.
Hardware:
- Product: HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-eu0xxx
- OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
- Kernel version: see attached report_completo.txt (section "KERNEL & OS INFO")
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS on HP ENVY x360 15-eu0xxx
2. Check /sys/class/leds/ for any *kbd_backlight* entry
3. Try function keys for keyboard backlight (e.g. Fn + F5 or the backlight key)
Expected behavior:
- A device such as inputX::kbd_backlight or platform::kbd_backlight should
appear in /sys/class/leds/
- Keyboard backlight should be controllable via sysfs or brightnessctl
Actual behavior:
- No kbd_backlight device is present in /sys/class/leds/
- Keyboard backlight cannot be controlled from Ubuntu
I have tried:
- Updating BIOS to the latest version available from HP
- Adding acpi_backlight=native and acpi_osi=Linux to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
- Checking for kernel updates and testing different ACPI parameters
Additional information (as requested by Ubuntu kernel bug reporting guidelines):
1) Release of Ubuntu: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
2) Kernel version: see attached report_completo.txt (section "KERNEL & OS INFO")
3) What I expected: keyboard backlight controllable via sysfs / brightnessctl
4) What happened: no kbd_backlight device in /sys/class/leds/, keyboard
backlight not usable
All diagnostic outputs (dmidecode, uname -a, /etc/os-release, ls
/sys/class/leds/, dmesg grep backlight/leds/kbd, lspci, lsusb, find /sys
-name '*backlight*') are included in the attached file:
report_completo.txt.
