Public bug reported:

Summary

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti in a Razer Core X Thunderbolt eGPU
enclosure fails to initialize on Ubuntu 24.04 with kernel
7.0.0-31-generic. The same hardware and NVIDIA driver work correctly on
kernel 6.17.0-40-generic.

Hardware

Laptop: Dell XPS 13 (exact model to be added)

eGPU enclosure: Razer Core X

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti, PCI ID 10de:17c8

A Quadro P620 also works in the same enclosure.

Software

Ubuntu 24.04

NVIDIA proprietary driver: 580.173.02

Failing kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic

Working kernel: 6.17.0-40-generic

Steps to reproduce

Connect the GTX 980 Ti in the Razer Core X to the Dell XPS 13.

Boot Ubuntu with kernel 7.0.0-31-generic.

Observe that the GPU is enumerated on PCIe but NVIDIA initialization
fails.

Run nvidia-smi; the GPU is unavailable.

Boot kernel 6.17.0-40-generic with the same NVIDIA 580.173.02 driver.

The GPU initializes successfully and is visible in nvidia-smi.

Expected result

The GTX 980 Ti initializes and is available to the NVIDIA driver, as it
does on kernel 6.17.0-40.

Actual result

The GPU is detected and PCIe BARs are assigned, but NVIDIA
initialization fails with:

NVRM: GPU 0000:06:00.0: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x30:0xffff:1156)
NVRM: GPU 0000:06:00.0: rm_init_adapter failed, device minor number 0
[nvidia-drm] Failed to allocate NvKmsKapiDevice
NVRM: GPU 0000:06:00.0: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x31:0xffff:2780)
Working-kernel confirmation

On kernel 6.17.0-40-generic, NVIDIA 580.173.02 loads successfully.
nvidia-smi reports the GTX 980 Ti with 6144 MiB VRAM, approximately
39°C, and 21 W idle power.

Additional information

The GPU previously worked in this exact laptop and enclosure setup. The
regression appears to be associated with the newer kernel, although the
underlying cause has not yet been identified.
