FWIW I've opened 2 PRs to snapd. First one https://github.com/canonical/snapd/pull/17598 will pick up any additional directories, on top of "kernel" and "vdso", found in the kernel and set them up such that you they are available to the system. The caveat is that this is only applied when the kernel snap is updated in the system. It skips directories named "updates" (it's used for injecting modules from components) and "build" (no point I guess?). The 2nd PR https://github.com/canonical/snapd/pull/17603 adds checks to the snap packing step to catch errors early on. Both are currently targeted for snapd 2.79.
