Public bug reported:
I am reporting a suspected kernel/NVIDIA compatibility regression after
updating Ubuntu. Booting the previous kernel restores GPU operation with
the same installed NVIDIA driver.
Environment:
- Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
- Proprietary NVIDIA driver 580.178.04
- Failing kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic
- Working kernel: 7.0.0-30-generic
- Secure Boot disabled; NVIDIA DKMS modules were installed for both kernels.
Steps to reproduce on this machine:
1. Boot 7.0.0-31-generic with NVIDIA driver 580.178.04 installed.
2. The attached monitor has no usable output and nvidia-smi reports: No devices
were found.
3. Reboot into 7.0.0-30-generic without changing the installed NVIDIA driver.
4. The GPU and monitor work again; nvidia-smi identifies the GTX 1060 3GB and
driver 580.178.04.
Error messages observed in the failing boot:
- Failed to copy vbios to system memory
- RmInitAdapter failed
- Failed to allocate NvKmsKapiDevice
Expected result:
The GPU initializes and provides display output under 7.0.0-31-generic, as it
does under 7.0.0-30-generic.
Comparison and limitations:
The failure recurred when the machine booted 7.0.0-31-generic again, and
reverting to 7.0.0-30-generic restored operation. No GPU initialization errors
were found in the checked working boot. The installed NVIDIA module and
userspace versions matched 580.178.04. This points to a regression involving
the newer kernel and this proprietary driver, but does not establish the
precise faulty component.
The NVIDIA driver had also recently been updated from 580.173.02 to
580.178.04. I have not tested the older driver against 7.0.0-31-generic.
The key comparison above uses 580.178.04 on both kernels.
Current workaround:
Keep 7.0.0-30-generic selected as the default GRUB entry. Package updates have
not been held.
This report is based on the observed failing-boot logs and subsequent
working-kernel checks. The machine is currently running the working
kernel; no fresh failing-kernel diagnostic archive is attached because
reproducing it again loses display output. Please advise which
additional diagnostics would be most useful.
