I am closing this here as well given the solution provided by Debian.
This could also bee seen as a wontfix due to the following comment:
however, the default
installation is not replacing gzip binary due to various concerns, like
differences in the output data, differences in program/help output, basic risk
considerations (/bin/gzip is an essential executable), and the fact that it's
installed in /usr spaces which might be not located within / filesystem space.
