Just wanted to add I have managed to verify that at least the kernel thinks that the write caching is enabled disabled. Using lsitool to set write caching on / off . I was able to verify this with scsiinfo -c /dev/sda
doing a write test via time ( dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile count=10240 bs=1M; sync ) yields roughly the same whether write caching is enabled or disabled. So - now im starting to think that this may not be the problem area.
