Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble) + HWE kernel
Hardware: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6GB (discrete only)
Working state:
- Kernel 7.0.0-30-generic
- nvidia-driver-595-open 595.84
- Both monitors work (HDMI-0 + HDMI-1)
- nvidia-smi works normally
Broken state (after normal update that installs kernel 7.0.0-31-generic):
- NVIDIA modules do not load
- Only "None-1" simple framebuffer appears
- Second monitor has no signal
- nvidia-smi fails with "couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver"
Attempting to install the matching modules fails with:
linux-modules-nvidia-595-open-7.0.0-31-generic
Depends: nvidia-kernel-common-595 (>= 595.91.07)
but 595.84-0ubuntu0.24.04.1 is to be installed
The reverse also fails: installing the newer nvidia-kernel-common-595
breaks the installed 595.84 packages (they require <= 595.84-1).
This is a packaging consistency issue: a newer HWE kernel is published
before a compatible set of linux-modules-nvidia-595-open +
nvidia-kernel-common-595 packages are available.
Expected: either the matching modules should already be available when
the kernel is published, or the kernel upgrade should be held until they are.
Workaround: boot previous kernel 7.0.0-30-generic.
