This bug is still reproducible on Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS in September 2026. In my case the problem was severe enough to exhaust memory and cause systemd-oomd to kill the entire GNOME user session, returning me to the GDM login screen. The machine itself did not reboot.
System: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS kernel 6.8.0-139-generic evince 46.3.1-0ubuntu1.1 Nemo file manager GNOME/Wayland session Before the failure the journal was flooded with: nemo.desktop[…]: page: Error: /usr/share/texlive/texmf- dist/fonts/tfm/public/cm/cmr10.tfm: File corrupted, or not a TFM file This appears to be the same DVI/evince-thumbnailer problem reported earlier in this bug. At 12:04:29, systemd-oomd reported the Nemo application scope using 12.0 GB: Path: /user.slice/user-1000.slice/[email protected]/app.slice/app-gnome-nemo-44561.scope Pressure: Avg10: 54.86 Avg60: 26.44 Avg300: 8.17 Current Memory Usage: 12.0G Shortly afterwards, at 12:06:11, systemd-oomd killed dbus, gvfs, gnome- session-manager, GNOME Shell, Nemo, Chrome, VS Code, GNOME Terminal and other processes. This terminated the graphical session. The installed /usr/share/thumbnailers/evince.thumbnailer still registers: application/x-bzdvi application/x-dvi application/x-ext-dvi application/x-gzdvi As a workaround I have now disabled these four MIME types through the GNOME/Cinnamon thumbnailer settings.
