As well as the man pages themselves, I would also like to point out that the current GNU man pages (and --help output) link to the appropriate part of the online full GNU manual, which is essentially a book sized reference with more details than appropriate for a man page. This is a very carefully curated reference, maintained over 30 years, which is a real loss to users IMHO.
