Public bug reported:
Ubuntu comes with different flavors such as vanilla Ubuntu, Kubuntu,
Xubuntu, Lubuntu, ..., and even the server version could be seen as a
flavor.
Unfortunately, there is no simple way to transition a machine from one
flavor to another, e.g. turn a Kubuntu machine into Lubuntu, and vice
versa.
there are *-desktop-packages. but simply installing lubuntu-desktop does not
turn a Kubuntu machine into Lubuntu. There's still differences, especially the
login managers and incompatible services. Migrating from one desktop to another
is error prone and some hard work even for experienced admins, since Login
Managers are not compatible with other desktops, but are not automatically
replaced by installing *-desktop packages. Desktops cannot coexist. Chances are
high to render the system unusable and to completely reinstall from scratch,
requiring to backup /home and reconfiguring.
On the other hand, Fedora immutablas (Silverblue, Kinoite,...) make it really
simple to transition, just rebase to another track.
I'd therefore strongly propose to create some transition mechanism, e.g.
*-transition packages, which do not just pull in what's needed, but remove,
what's incompatible, and reconfigures e.g. replaces login managers and such
things, just to make changing the desktop simple without need to completely
reinstall.
