[ Rationale ] * Introduce `lustre` as a new source package in stonking/universe (2.17.58+dfsg-0ubuntu1): the Lustre parallel filesystem, including client and server userspace, and a DKMS kernel module package using ZFS OSD as its backend. * Charmed Lustre is the main driver (https://charmhub.io/lustre-server). The charm currently uses a PPA (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-hpc/+archive/ubuntu/lustre-2.17) to install the required Lustre packages. This does not work for a formal product, since it doesn't give any security patches and maintenance guarantees. Landing in Universe formalizes the offering and ends the PPA dependency. [ Scope ] * New source package for the current series only. - Binaries: lustre-client-utils, lustre-server-utils, lustre-resource-agents, liblustreapi1, liblnetconfig4, liblustreapi-dev, liblnetconfig-dev, lustre-dkms - Target: stonking/universe. Goes through NEW. * Upstream: Lustre 2.17.58 (https://github.com/Lustre/lustre-release/tree/2.17.58). There is no current archive version to diff the upstream changelog against; the name last shipped as 1.8.5+dfsg-3.1ubuntu2 in 2013, and the PPA publication page already carries Launchpad's diff against that version. It builds and installs the lustre-dkms module for the running kernel inside a qemu testbed. The test ships in the package and will run in Ubuntu CI on publication, including per-kernel triggers through the dkms hook. New package, no reverse dependencies. [ Regression Potential ] * This is a new package. There are no archive users to regress and nothing depends on it. Potential regressions: - DKMS builds fail on user kernels as ABIs move. The autopkgtest exercises this exact build path. - ZFS version mismatch. The Lustre DKMS package has a dependency on the ZFS DKMS package for its compilation process. If the ZFS version used in the lustre build and the runtime ZFS mismatch, module load fails with "disagrees about version of symbol"; the versioned zfs-dkms (>= 2.0.7) dependency prevents this by making lustre build against the zfs it will load. [ Other Info ] * Historical note: a `lustre` source package existed in Ubuntu universe (section admin, 1.8.5+dfsg-3.1ubuntu2) until it was removed during the Trusty cycle (RoQA, Debian #690459, "does not work with Debian Linux kernel packages").
