Description:
Hello,
Following the system updates installed around September 21 (which
included updates to glib2.0, gstreamer, pipewire, among others), my
system started experiencing severe crashes on the Wayland session.
The issue seems closely tied to power management and screen locking.
When the automatic screen lock is activated, or when waking the laptop
up from sleep/suspend, I am met with a black screen and the message:
"The screen locker is broken and unlocking is not possible anymore".
Subsequently (or sometimes immediately upon a fresh login), plasmashell
crashes with a "Segmentation fault", tries to restart automatically, and
crashes again continuously in an infinite loop, making the GUI
completely unusable. The underlying system and TTY work perfectly fine.
Workaround Found:
I managed to stop the crash loop, fix the screen locker issue, and stabilize
the Wayland session by completely disabling DRM modifiers for KWin. I applied
the following environment variable:
KWIN_DRM_USE_MODIFIERS=0 (added to /etc/environment)
After a reboot with this variable applied, Wayland runs perfectly fine
on my older Intel GPU. This suggests a regression in how Wayland/KWin
handles DRM modifiers with older Intel drivers or waking from DPMS after
the recent updates.
Attachments:
I have extracted the core dump using coredumpctl info plasmashell right
after the crash occurred (before applying the workaround). I have
attached the .txt file to this report for further debugging.
