Notes on the apport data above:

1. apport's CurrentDmesg failed (it ran without root), so no kernel log came
through.
Attached: lp2168537-OopsTraces.txt, the full oops traces from two affected
boots
of the stock 7.0.0-31-generic kernel. The kernel was untainted before the
first oops each time.
   - 2026-09-19 04:25: Oops #1 in kcompactd0 (exited with irqs disabled). Oops
#2 and #3
hit the same notifier from direct compaction in `apt` and `systemctl`. #3
happened
     during `systemctl reboot`, via amdgpu_pci_shutdown ->
amdgpu_uvd_prepare_suspend,
so the machine could not reboot cleanly. It needed sysrq-b or a power
cycle.
   - 2026-09-25 01:21: Oops #1 in kcompactd0, 2 seconds after an ffmpeg Vulkan
transcode
started. Oops #2 was in that ffmpeg's own thread, when the transcode was
retried.

2. The "(O)" on amdgpu in ProcModules is my local test of the fix. I collected
the
apport data while running amdgpu rebuilt through DKMS from the resolute
linux-source 7.0.0-34.34, with only 52f650963d88 applied. The patch applied
cleanly (one hunk, offset -4). Two small build-only adjustments were needed
out of tree:
   TRACE_INCLUDE_PATH and -I$(src) for amdgpu_trace_points.o. The in-tree build
doesn't
   need them.
The patched module loads and initializes normally on this RX 550 (Polaris
12):
"[drm] Initialized amdgpu 3.64.0". I'll report back after running the
triggering
   workload for a while.
