Public bug reported: Ubuntu randomly experiences a complete system freeze: the display stops updating and both keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, requiring a hard reboot.
The affected system is an Acer Swift 3 with an AMD Raven Ridge / Radeon Vega 3 integrated GPU: Ubuntu 24.04 Kernel: 7.0.0-34-generic GNOME 46 / Wayland Xwayland 23.2.6 Mesa 25.2.8 GPU: AMD Raven Ridge / Radeon Vega 3, PCI ID 1002:15dd Driver: amdgpu The previous boot's journal contains no kernel panic, Oops, GPU timeout/reset, storage I/O error, or filesystem error immediately before the lockup. The last recorded events are normal sysstat-collect.service activity at 18:50:32, after which logging stops. The system was subsequently rebooted. There was also an earlier Xwayland failure during the same boot (Connection to xwayland lost / Xwayland exited unexpectedly), so the graphics stack may be relevant, although there is currently insufficient evidence to establish that it caused the later complete system lockup. Relevant observations: AMDGPU initializes normally at boot. No GPU reset or timeout is recorded before the final loss of journal messages. SSD/storage initialization is normal and no disk/filesystem errors were found. The freeze is a complete machine lockup rather than merely a GNOME application crash. Usually this seems to happen while watching streamed videos (youtube, for example), making me think that there is something happening with the 3D acceleration/graphics stack.. however this last instance i was simply viewing an online map (https://vatsim-radar.com/).
