** Description changed:

+ Hello Release team,
+
+ Please accept this FFE to update MariaDB and MySQL in stonking to allow
+ the two servers to be co-installed. This allows us to make sure packages
+ depending directly on mariadb-server or mysql-server can be installed
+ and used at the same time, which mitigates issues caused by Debian's
+ move toward removing default-mysql-* packages
+ (https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2026/05/msg00161.html).
+
+ The changes required are shown in attached merge proposals. On the
+ mariadb side this includes
+
+ - Moving the config directory from /etc/mysql to /etc/mariadb
+ - Removing /etc/mysql/my.cnf alternatives use and removing mysql-common
dependency
+ - Renaming the binaries my_print_defaults, perror, innochecksum,
myisam_ftdump, myisamchk, myisamlog and myisampack, adding symlinks with
original names to them in mariadb-server-compat
+ - Moving remaining mysql compat symlinks to mariadb-server-compat
+ - Adding port 3306 backoff to 3307 logic when 3306 is in use
+ - Updating package conflicts
+
+ On the mysql side this includes
+
+ - Adding port 3306 backoff to 3307 logic when 3306 is in use
+ - Updating package conflicts
+
+
+ PPA with changes here -
https://launchpad.net/~lvoytek/+archive/ubuntu/mariadb-mysql-co-install
+
+ Autopkgtests for both packages are passing, including upstream test
+ suite tests, and using the packages from the PPA confirms that mariadb-
+ server and mysql-server can be installed/removed/purged in any
+ combination together on the same system.
+
+ Notably the removal of mysql-defaults is not necessary to solve this
+ issue, and we can wait on that till next cycle.

+ [Original info]
+
With the release of MySQL 9.7, and the push toward the removal of
default-mysql-* packages, MariaDB and MySQL should no longer be
considered interchangeable. In order to allow packages depending on one
or the other to be installed at the same time, mysql-server and mariadb-
server along with their dependencies should also be installable at the
  same time.

To do this, mariadb-server will need to move its runtime directory from
/run/mysqld to /run/mariadbd and its config directory from /etc/mysql to
/etc/mariadb. Likewise, remaining MariaDB symlinks used to achieve
compatibility should be moved to the mariadb-compat package. Lastly,
both mysql-server and mariadb-server binaries with conflicting names
will need to be updated, with alternatives symlinks to point to them.

This update will make the mysql-common package no longer necessary, as
my.cnf alternatives will no longer be needed. Once the removal of
default-mysql-* is complete, mysql-defaults can be removed completely.
