Public bug reported:

When I dock and then undock my laptop, running ubuntu 24.04, it then
fails to suspend until I reboot it. I was able to track it down to a
dock firmware update. Reverting the firmware works around the issue. I
couldn't find a way to report this to dell without opening a support
ticket, I don't think I have support contract anymore, so I thought I
would report it here, since I know you guys have a relationship with
them and an interest in making sure ubuntu is working on their hardware.
Feel free to close this ticket if you don't think it is relevant with my
apologies for wasting your time.

I did the troubleshooting with the help of AI, but here is a summary in
my own words: If I close my lid to my laptop (XPS 15 9510) it suspends
normally. If I instead plug it into my docking first then unlplug it, it
will no longer suspend until it has been rebooted. Reverting to a
previous version of the dock firmware works around the issue.

Here is the report from my agent with much more detail including kernel
logs and reproduction steps (also see attached logs):

On a Dell XPS 15 9510 (Tiger Lake-H + NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti, PRIME on-demand, RTD3
enabled), after the
Dell WD19 dock is updated to firmware Package 01.01.03.01 (current LVFS
release), the dGPU can no
longer be powered back on after the dock is unplugged. The ACPI power-on method
for the dGPU's PCIe
port times out, the PCIe link does not come up, and the NVIDIA driver reports
Xid 79 ("GPU has
fallen off the bus"). After that every s2idle attempt is aborted with the dGPU
returning -5, until
reboot.

Rolling the dock back to Package 01.01.02.01 (the previous LVFS bundle) fixes
it with no other
change. Bundles 01.01.02.01 and 01.01.03.01 differ only in the dock's Package
level firmware. The
WD19 EC, both USB hub chips and the MST hub are the same version in both.

This looks closely related to LP: #1931072 ("USB Type-C hotplug event not
handled properly in
TGL-H system during s2idle"). That bug is the same platform class (TGL-H +
NVIDIA + WD19 Type-C
dock), with the same ACPI failure in \_SB.PC00.PEG1.NPON (AE_AML_LOOP_TIMEOUT)
blocking dGPU
power-on. It was fixed by "drm/i915: Force a TypeC PHY disconnect during
suspend/shutdown". Here
the dock is unplugged while the system is awake, and the failure shows up on
the next dGPU
power-on / suspend.

Steps to reproduce
1. WD19 on Package 01.01.03.01, reboot.
2. Suspend (lid close) undocked: works.
3. Dock, then undock; suspend: works.
4. Dock, then undock again; suspend: fails. The dGPU falls off the bus, and
every later suspend
   attempt is aborted until reboot.

Expected: s2idle works after undocking, as it does on dock Package
01.01.02.01 and 01.01.01.01.

Environment
  Dell XPS 15 9510, BIOS 1.48.0
Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, kernel 7.0.0-34-generic, GNOME 46 Wayland
  nvidia-driver-580 580.178.04, NVreg_DynamicPowerManagement=0x02 (Ubuntu
default)
  Dell WD19 dock: Package 01.01.03.01, EC 01.01.00.16, RTS5413 01.25, RTS5487
01.66, VMM5331 05.07.08
Two external DisplayPort monitors on the dock (MST), driven by the Intel iGPU

Workarounds
  - Dock firmware Package 01.01.02.01, or
  - options nvidia NVreg_DynamicPowerManagement=0x00 (disables dGPU RTD3)

This has also been reported to Dell. The dock firmware change is the trigger,
but LP #1931072 shows
the kernel side (i915 Type-C PHY handling / dGPU power sequencing) may be where
it can be mitigated.
