Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 26.04.1 with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 was working normally on
September 26, 2026.

On September 26 at 09:41, unattended-upgrade automatically installed
kernel 7.0.0-34-generic. The NVIDIA 595 driver packages were already
being kept back because APT could not resolve the NVIDIA driver upgrade.

The unattended-upgrades log contains:

"package nvidia-driver-595-open upgradable but fails to be marked for
upgrade (E to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)"

Despite the NVIDIA packages being kept back, unattended-upgrade
proceeded with installation of linux-image-7.0.0-34-generic and the
associated kernel packages.

After powering the computer on the following morning, September 27,
Ubuntu booted kernel 7.0.0-34-generic but the NVIDIA driver was not
functioning correctly. The desktop initially loaded at an incorrect
resolution and would not allow the resolution to be changed.

While troubleshooting, attempting to update the NVIDIA packages resulted
in a partial upgrade/package dependency problem. After rebooting, GDM
could no longer start the graphical desktop and the machine stopped at a
black screen with a cursor/dash. A TTY remained accessible.

`nvidia-smi` was unavailable, and `ubuntu-drivers devices` identified
`nvidia-driver-595-open` as the recommended driver.

Further troubleshooting showed that `libnvidia-gl-595:i386` version
595.84 was installed while the repository was attempting to install
NVIDIA 595.91.07 packages. Installing `libnvidia-gl-595:amd64` removed
the older 595.84 i386 package and installed the 595.91.07 libraries.

I then successfully installed:

nvidia-driver-595-open 595.91.07-0ubuntu0.26.04.1

After rebooting, the graphical desktop and correct display resolution
were restored.

The unattended-upgrades logs show NVIDIA packages failing to upgrade and
being kept back beginning September 23. On September 26, unattended-
upgrade installed the new 7.0.0-34 kernel despite the NVIDIA
driver/kernel-module packages remaining unresolved.

Expected behavior:

If the NVIDIA kernel module required by the currently installed NVIDIA
driver cannot be installed for a new kernel, unattended-upgrade should
not automatically install/activate that kernel in a way that results in
a nonfunctional NVIDIA graphics configuration after reboot.

Actual behavior:

The new kernel was installed automatically while the NVIDIA driver stack
remained unresolved. The problem became apparent on the next boot and
ultimately resulted in loss of the graphical desktop until the NVIDIA
package conflict was manually repaired and the driver reinstalled.
