Public bug reported:
I am experiencing a recurring problem with the proprietary NVIDIA driver
on Ubuntu 24.04.
After system updates, Ubuntu sometimes boots without a working NVIDIA
kernel module. When this happens, only one of my two monitors works and
the available screen resolution is very low.
Hardware:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (GP107)
Ubuntu version:
Ubuntu 24.04
Kernel at the time of the problem:
6.8.0-142-generic
Secure Boot:
Disabled
EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
After an Ubuntu system or kernel update, the installed NVIDIA driver
should continue working with the new kernel. Both monitors should be
detected and the normal display resolutions should remain available.
ACTUAL BEHAVIOR
After the update, the NVIDIA driver metapackage was installed, but the
NVIDIA kernel module required by the running kernel was missing.
Running:
nvidia-smi
returned:
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA
driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and
running.
The GPU itself was correctly detected as:
NVIDIA Corporation GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti]
However:
lsmod | grep -E 'nvidia|nouveau'
returned no output.
Attempting to load the NVIDIA driver manually:
sudo modprobe nvidia
returned:
modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory
/lib/modules/6.8.0-142-generic
The installed NVIDIA packages included:
nvidia-driver-580
nvidia-kernel-common-580
nvidia-kernel-source-580
However, the NVIDIA kernel module for the running kernel was not
installed.
This was confirmed with:
apt-cache policy linux-modules-nvidia-580-6.8.0-142-generic
which reported:
Installed: (none)
WORKAROUND
Installing the missing Ubuntu kernel module package fixed the problem:
sudo apt install linux-modules-nvidia-580-$(uname -r)
After installation, the expected NVIDIA kernel modules appeared,
including:
nvidia.ko
nvidia-drm.ko
nvidia-modeset.ko
nvidia-uvm.ko
nvidia-peermem.ko
After:
sudo modprobe nvidia
the driver loaded successfully.
nvidia-smi then correctly detected:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
Driver Version: 580.178.04
Xorg and GNOME Shell were again using the NVIDIA GPU.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is a recurring problem on this system. NVIDIA driver functionality
has been lost after Ubuntu updates on previous occasions as well.
In this occurrence, the NVIDIA driver package remained installed while
the NVIDIA kernel module required by the currently running Ubuntu kernel
was absent. This left the graphical environment partially functional,
with one monitor unavailable and the remaining monitor operating at low
resolution.
Installing the matching linux-modules-nvidia package restored normal
NVIDIA operation.
I initially attempted to report this problem using:
ubuntu-bug xorg
Apport successfully collected the diagnostic information and opened
Launchpad, but the Launchpad page remained indefinitely at:
"Please wait while bug data is processed."
I therefore had to submit this report manually.
The Apport diagnostic information was collected after the NVIDIA driver
had been repaired, so it reflects the working NVIDIA configuration. The
command outputs included above document the state observed before the
repair.
