Public bug reported:

mini-dinstall 0.7.3build1 fails to build from source in stonking.

Regressing architectures (built before, fail now): amd64 (arch:all package,
amd64 is the only build, so this affects all architectures).
Build log(s):
  -
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mini-dinstall/0.7.3build1/+build/32793513/+files/buildlog_ubuntu-stonking-amd64.mini-dinstall_0.7.3build1_BUILDING.txt.gz
Diagnosis (deterministic matcher): compiler-error — dh_auto_build: error:
pybuild --build -i python{version} -p 3.14 --parallel=8 returned exit code 13.
(Manual analysis: this is actually a Python packaging version-validation error,
not a compiler error.)

Root cause:
debian/rules override_dh_auto_clean writes DEB_VERSION_UPSTREAM into
minidinstall/version.py, which setup.cfg uses as the Python package version
(version = attr: minidinstall.version.pkg_version). mini-dinstall is a
3.0 (native) package, so the Ubuntu no-change-rebuild version '0.7.3build1'
is written verbatim. It is not a valid PEP 440 version, and setuptools in
stonking fails in bdist_wheel:

  packaging.version.InvalidVersion: Invalid version: '0.7.3build1'
ERROR Backend subprocess exited when trying to invoke build_wheel

Suggested fix:
Sanitise the version in debian/rules before writing version.py, e.g. strip
the Ubuntu suffix:
  echo "pkg_version = \"$(shell echo $(DEB_VERSION_UPSTREAM) | sed -E
's/(build|ubuntu).*//')\""
or map it to a PEP 440 local version (0.7.3+build1). Note an upload as
0.7.3ubuntu1 would hit the same failure unless debian/rules is fixed.
Worth forwarding to Debian (https://salsa.debian.org/debian/mini-dinstall)
so future Ubuntu rebuilds don't break; Debian itself is unaffected since its
native versions are PEP 440-valid. No existing Ubuntu or Debian bug found.
