Public bug reported:
Summary:
This issue is caused by a missing kernel component in Ubuntu 26.04.1 kernel
7.0.0-34-generic. The kernel does not include the MCTP PCIe VDM transport
driver (CONFIG_MCTP_TRANSPORT_PCIE_VDM), which is required for PLDM-based
firmware updates of the Broadcom BCM57414 OCP NIC.
The Dell Update Package (DUP) selects the PLDM firmware image
(BCM957414-N225GI4S.pup) for the BCM57414 OCP NIC and invokes the bnxt_dup_isd
binary to perform the update. That binary uses MCTP over PCIe VDM to
communicate with the NIC. Because the Ubuntu 26.04.1 kernel lacks the PCIe VDM
transport driver, no MCTP endpoint can be created over PCIe, and bnxt_dup_isd
install fails with:
Error installing package: FAILURE (errno: 2, No such file or directory)
The kernel already has MCTP core support enabled (CONFIG_MCTP=y, NET:
Registered PF_MCTP), but only I2C, I3C, Serial, and USB transports are
available. The PCIe VDM transport is missing from both the kernel config and
the installed modules.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu 26.04.1 on a Dell PowerEdge system with Broadcom BCM57414 OCP
NIC.
2. Boot with inbox bnxt_en and bnxt_re drivers (no OOT drivers).
3. Run the Dell DUP: /root/Network_Firmware_RXK6N_LN64_239.1.122.0.BIN
4. Force the update when prompted.
5. Observe the failure for both NIC ports:
Error installing package: FAILURE (errno: 2, No such file or directory)
6. Verify the missing kernel support:
cat /boot/config-$(uname -r) | grep MCTP_TRANSPORT
find /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/mctp -type f
Expected Result:
The kernel should provide the MCTP PCIe VDM transport driver
(CONFIG_MCTP_TRANSPORT_PCIE_VDM=m or =y) so that bnxt_dup_isd can establish a
PLDM endpoint over PCIe and update the NIC firmware successfully.
Actual Result:
CONFIG_MCTP_TRANSPORT_PCIE_VDM is absent from the kernel config, no
mctp-pcie-vdm.ko module exists, and the firmware update fails with errno 2.
