I did some more debugging. If I delete the temporary directory I found in /tmp (associated with the upgrade), then I can restart the upgrade. I think it might be useful if there were an option that dumped out all the various files/directories that needed to be deleted/reverted, in order to back out the upgrade ..... that is, up to the point where it's no longer possible, of course.
