Public bug reported:
After nvidia-driver-580-open was upgraded from 580.173.02 to 580.178.04
on 2026-09-25 (via unattended-upgrades, resolute-security), browser
performance became noticeably laggy. YouTube video playback is choppy,
and the YouTube player controls (volume slider expanding, pause/play)
respond slowly. This happens in both Brave and Firefox.
System:
- Ubuntu 26.04 (resolute), GNOME 50 on Wayland
- Package: nvidia-driver-580-open 580.178.04-0ubuntu0.26.04.1
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 16GB
- CPU: Intel i5-14600K (iGPU enabled, no monitors attached to it)
- 3 monitors on the NVIDIA GPU: 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz (150% scale), 2x 2560x1440 @
60 Hz (100% scale). Display settings unchanged before and after the upgrade.
What I tested:
- nvidia-smi works normally; the driver loads cleanly, with no NVIDIA/DRM
errors in the kernel log
- CPU, RAM and GPU usage were near idle when checked
- Same lag on kernel 7.0.0-31 and 7.0.0-34 (both with 580.178.04 modules)
- Same lag with Brave on native Wayland and via Xwayland (--ozone-platform=x11)
- Same lag in Firefox, so not specific to one browser
- Logging out and back in does not help
Other recent change: mutter was upgraded to 50.1-0ubuntu2.4 on
2026-09-21, so I can't fully rule it out.
Expected: smooth YouTube playback and responsive browser UI, as with 580.173.02.
What happened: choppy video and slow-responding YouTube controls in Brave and
Firefox since the 580.178.04 upgrade.
Note: this report was collected while booted into kernel 7.0.0-31 for
testing. My normal kernel is 7.0.0-34; the lag is the same on both.
