Public bug reported:
Hello,
I am experiencing a critical bug on Ubuntu 26.04 with an AMD Radeon RX 460/560D
graphics card.
Whenever the system tries to initialize or update the AMDGPU driver
(specifically during sudo update-initramfs -u), the kernel crashes with a
memory conflict, resulting in an immediate "sync: error syncing... Input/output
error". Right after this error, the whole ext4 file system (/dev/sda2) gets
instantly locked into a Read-Only state by the safety mechanism.
Hardware check: The SSD/HDD drive physical health has been thoroughly verified
using S.M.A.R.T. tools (smartctl) and is completely healthy (Status: PASSED).
The drive only has 11% space used.
This bug is specific to the new kernel in Ubuntu 26.04. The exact same hardware
configuration (including the Dual-Link DVI monitor) works flawlessly on Ubuntu
24.04 LTS and macOS.
Thank you for looking into this AMDGPU / kernel sync regression.
