Public bug reported:
Machine in question has in the past been successfully upgraded through
LTS releases from 14.04 to 24.04. Today attempted to upgrade to 24.04
LTS. Upgrade repeatedly failed at this point:
Calculating the changes
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
Examined /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log; observed:
2026-10-02 15:42:20,669 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'E:Error,
pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held
packages.'
In /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log, a surprising number of entries began
with 'Broken', though nothing similar was reported in repeated instances
of 'sudo apt update', 'apt upgrade', 'apt dist-upgrade', etc.
$ lsb_release -rd

Web searches for the ERROR reported in main.log recommended various
interventions, such as removing "broken" packages. However these
interventions were unsuccessful, as the same ERROR kept reappearing.
