Public bug reported:
Package: gnome-remote-desktop 50.2-0ubuntu0.1 (FreeRDP
3.32.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.26.04.1) Release: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, GNOME on
Wayland, remote login via GDM (headless, Hyper-V guest) Client: Windows
11 Pro 10.0.26200 built-in Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc), clipboard
redirection on
Steps to reproduce: 1. Connect to the Ubuntu machine with mstsc and log
in through the GDM remote-login screen. 2. On Windows, copy a file in
Explorer (Ctrl+C on a file on the Desktop). 3. In the RDP session, open
Nautilus and right-click in a folder.
Expected: the context menu opens (with Paste available). Actual: the RDP
picture freezes immediately and stays frozen. The session itself is
fine: gnome-shell and Nautilus keep answering D-Bus pings, and nothing
is in D state. The user-session daemon (gnome-remote-desktop-daemon
--handover) has its main thread spinning at ~100% CPU (top -H), so no
frames are sent. The client keeps sending refresh-rect requests, which
are ignored. About 90 s later gnome-shell logs: gnome-shell: Could not
fetch selection data: Remote selection transfer was cancelled The
display still doesn’t recover. After the client disconnects, the daemon
stays stuck in “stopping session” at ~90% CPU, logging BIO_should_retry
... Broken pipe once a minute, and blocks reconnects. systemctl --user
stop needs systemd’s SIGKILL timeout.
Reproduced twice on 2026-10-03 (11:16 and 11:40 EDT). The CLIPRDR FUSE
mount (/run/user/1000/gnome-remote-desktop/cliprdr-*) existed and was
listable during the freeze.
Recovery: close the client, copy plain text on Windows, systemctl --user
kill -s KILL gnome-remote-desktop-handover.service; systemctl --user
restart gnome-remote-desktop-handover.service, reconnect. The session
survives. Note: restarting the system gnome-remote-desktop.service while
the user session is alive leaves GDM’s RemoteDisplay pointing at a stale
client id. After that every GDM remote login authenticates but never
hands over ([DaemonHandover] Failed to start handover:
...UnknownObject), and only ending the session or rebooting recovers it.
Regression: copying files from Windows used to work on this setup.
Candidate changes: - freerdp3 3.31.0 -> 3.32.0 security update
(installed 2026-09-29) - mutter 50.1-0ubuntu2.2 -> 2.4 (2026-09-20) -
gnome-remote-desktop 50.0 -> 50.2 (2026-08-22)
Possibly related, from the handover daemon at startup: ***
pw_stream_set_active called from wrong context, check thread and
locking: Device or resource busy g_close(fd:0) failed with EBADF. The
tracking of file descriptors got messed up (system daemon)
g_atomic_ref_count_dec: assertion ‘old_value > 0’ failed AppArmor also
denies dac_override/setuid for profile “fusermount3” on every cliprdr
mount/unmount. Mounting still succeeds, so this probably isn’t the
cause.
