Public bug reported: The comments in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades state:
"A package that provides 'mailx' must be installed." However, the installed /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade source defines: MAIL_BINARY = "/usr/bin/mail" SENDMAIL_BINARY = "/usr/sbin/sendmail" and the mail-sending code invokes /usr/bin/mail or /usr/sbin/sendmail, not mailx. In the source code too there are comments referring to "mailx". All these comments appear to be misaligned with source code. They should either refer to /usr/bin/mail or /usr/sbin/sendmail. Moreover, the documentation available at https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/how-to/software/automatic-updates/ state: "Sending out emails like this requires the separate configuration of a package like ssmtp(8) or another minimalistic mail client that is capable of sending messages to a mail server." However, ssmtp package is now supeseeded by msmtp which only provides a sendmail-like interface, neither mailx nor mail. $ lsb_release -rd No LSB modules are available.
