Public bug reported:
Hardware: Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x 14Q8X9 (DMI 83ED), Snapdragon X Elite
X1E80100. Ubuntu 26.04 arm64, kernel 7.0.0-31-generic, dracut
110-11ubuntu0.1, linux-firmware 20260319.git217ca6e4.1ubuntu, linux-
firmware-qualcomm-graphics installed.
Every boot logs:
msm_dpu ae01000.display-controller: Direct firmware load for
qcom/gen70500_sqe.fw failed with error -2
[drm:adreno_request_fw [msm]] *ERROR* failed to load gen70500_sqe.fw
About 6 s later, after rootfs is mounted, it succeeds: "loaded
qcom/gen70500_sqe.fw from new location" (same for gen70500_gmu.bin).
Cause: msm.ko is in the initramfs, but `modinfo msm` declares no
firmware: entries, so dracut can't know to include qcom/gen70500_sqe.fw,
qcom/gen70500_gmu.bin or qcom/x1e80100/gen70500_zap.mbn. lsinitrd
confirms other qcom/x1e80100 firmware (adsp, cdsp) is present but not
these.
Workaround (confirmed: after a reboot the failed load is gone and the GPU
firmware loads on the first try):
/etc/dracut.conf.d/adreno-x1.conf:
install_items+=" /usr/lib/firmware/qcom/gen70500_sqe.fw.zst
/usr/lib/firmware/qcom/gen70500_gmu.bin.zst
/usr/lib/firmware/qcom/x1e80100/gen70500_zap.mbn.zst "
then: sudo dracut -f
Suggested fix: ship that dracut snippet with linux-firmware-qualcomm-
graphics, or have the kernel add MODULE_FIRMWARE for the a7xx entries in
drivers/gpu/drm/msm/adreno/adreno_device.c so dracut picks them up
automatically.
