Public bug reported:
Title: gnome-remote-desktop-daemon spins at 100% CPU and RDP session
freezes when selecting a folder in Files (clipboard redirection enabled)
Package: gnome-remote-desktop
Ubuntu version: 26.10
Client: Windows Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc), clipboard redirection enabled
Hardware: Intel Ivy Bridge GPU, 7.3 GB RAM
Description:
When connected to the Ubuntu desktop via RDP (gnome-remote-desktop), opening
the Files app works, but as soon as I select a folder, the RDP session freezes
completely. The only way to recover is to restart the session.
While the session is frozen:
- SSH to the machine still works normally.
- top shows gnome-remote-desktop-daemon (--handover) at ~100% CPU (one core).
The busy thread is the main thread of the process, not an encoding thread
(checked with top -H).
- The desktop itself is still alive: it eventually goes to the screensaver, but
the RDP view stays frozen.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Enable Remote Desktop (RDP) in GNOME settings.
2. Connect from a Windows client with clipboard redirection enabled (default).
3. Open the Files app.
4. Select a folder.
5. The session freezes and the daemon spins at 100% CPU.
Workaround:
Disabling "Clipboard" in the Windows RDP client (Local Resources tab)
completely stops the freeze. This suggests the problem is related to clipboard
/ file clipboard (CLIPRDR) handling, since the client advertises "stream file
clip, file clip no file paths, can lock clip data, huge file support".
Things I tested that did NOT fix it:
- Disabling Vulkan for the daemon (VK_DRIVER_FILES / VK_ICD_FILENAMES set to a
nonexistent path via systemctl --user set-environment, then restarting
gnome-remote-desktop and gnome-remote-desktop-handover). The "Initialization of
Vulkan" log line disappeared, but the freeze remained.
Relevant journal lines (journalctl --user -b):
gnome-remote-desktop-daemon: Cannot load libcuda.so.1
gnome-remote-desktop-daemon: Cannot load libnvidia-encode.so.1
gnome-remote-desktop-daemon: MESA-INTEL: warning: Ivy Bridge Vulkan support is
incomplete
gnome-remote-desktop-daemon: [RDP] Did not initialize VAAPI: Failed to
initialize VA display: unknown libva error

Expected behavior: selecting a folder in Files over RDP should not freeze the
session.
Actual behavior: the session freezes and gnome-remote-desktop-daemon uses 100%
CPU until the session is restarted.
