Public bug reported:
On Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS with GNOME 50, when I open a document from GNOME
Files on the current workspace, the document is sometimes opened in an
existing window of the default application on a different workspace.
For example, if an application has an open window on workspace 2 and I
am currently working on workspace 1, opening a document from GNOME Files
on workspace 1 may activate the application's window on workspace 2
instead of opening the document on the current workspace.
Expected behavior:
If the target application already has a window on the current workspace,
the document should be opened in that window.
If the target application has no window on the current workspace, a new
window should preferably be opened on the current workspace rather than
activating an existing window on another workspace.
This behavior should be consistent across applications and should not
depend on which particular application is associated with the file type.
This is especially noticeable when working with multiple virtual
workspaces and opening files using double-click or Enter in GNOME Files.
The issue does not appear to be specific to a particular application;
Gedit is only one example. The desired behavior is to keep the user's
current workspace as the context for opening the document.
