Title:
Intermittent hang at final stage of reboot/poweroff with AMD RX 7600 XT on
7.0.0-34; 7.0.0-22 works
Description:
On Kubuntu 26.04, restart and shutdown intermittently hang at the very end. The
machine never resets or powers off and must be forced off with the power
button. Booting the older kernel 7.0.0-22 fixes it completely.
Hardware:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT (Navi 33)
- Motherboard: MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI (MS-7E26), BIOS 7E26v1O4 (latest)
- RAM: 16 GB DDR5 (EXPO 5600)
- Wi-Fi/BT: MediaTek MT7922
Software:
- Kubuntu 26.04, Plasma Wayland
- Affected kernel: 7.0.0-34-generic and 7.0.0-38-generic (those I tried)
- Working kernel: 7.0.0-22-generic
Symptoms:
- systemd shutdown completes normally. With quiet splash removed, the last
visible line is "Reached target reboot.target - System Reboot".
- Then USB powers off (keyboard lights go dark) and the screen goes black, but
the system never resets or powers off.
- The motherboard's EZ Debug LEDs are all off, so the firmware is not stuck in
POST.
- The journal ends normally with "Journal stopped" on both good and hung
restarts, so the hang happens after journald stops.
- Frequency: about [X] out of [Y] restarts.
Things tested that did NOT help (on 7.0.0-34):
- reboot=efi and reboot=pci kernel parameters
- BIOS update to the latest version (7E26v1O4)
- Disabling the CPU's integrated GPU in BIOS (only the RX 7600 XT active)
- Unloading the Wi-Fi (mt7921e) and Bluetooth (btusb) drivers before shutdown
Workaround:
Booting kernel 7.0.0-22-generic: [X] restarts and shutdowns tested, all
completed normally.
