Thanks. Tested with MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple in
/etc/environment and a reboot. It is active in both the greeter
([email protected]) and the user session: "Added device
'/dev/dri/card1' (nvidia-drm) using non-atomic mode setting." and
likewise for card2 (i915). Earlier boots logged "atomic".

Results are unchanged:
- The GDM greeter was squeezed when it first appeared.
- Logical layout, eDP at scale 2 plus four 1920x1080 monitors in a row (stage
9600 logical, ×2 = 19200): the eDP is squeezed and pointer input is offset. A
screenshot fails with "Error capturing screenshot: Failed to create texture 2d
due to size/format constraints".
- Same layout with one monitor moved below the row (stage 7680, ×2 = 15360):
not squeezed, and the screenshot succeeds. The PNG is 15360x4320, i.e. the
whole stage at scale 2.
- No drmModeAtomicCommit, KMS update or page-flip errors during that boot.
drm_info while squeezed shows the eDP primary plane with FB/SRC/CRTC all
3840x2160 at 1:1, identical to the working state.

So atomic KMS doesn't appear to be involved. glxinfo on the Intel primary GPU
(Mesa Intel UHD Graphics, TGL GT1) reports GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE = 16384, which
falls between the working (15360) and failing (19200) stage widths. Even on
Wayland, something still seems to allocate stage-sized textures at the max
monitor scale: the screenshot path does, and the journal has many "Failed to
create offscreen effect framebuffer: Failed to create texture 2d due to
size/format constraints" messages going back weeks.
▎
Since scale-monitor-framebuffer became non-experimental in mutter 50, the
configuration mutter generates at login when no stored config matches (all
monitors in a row, eDP at its preferred scale 2) exceeds the limit on this
hardware. Physical layout mode avoids it here only because the physical stage
(11520) happens to be under 16384; keeping stage width × max scale under 16384
in logical mode also avoids it.
