Public bug reported:
Affected environment
OS: Linux Mint 22.3, based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble)
NetworkManager: 1.46.0-1ubuntu2.8
Netplan: 1.1.2-8ubuntu1~24.04.3
Wi-Fi adapter: MediaTek MT7921U USB adapter
Interface: wlxe84e06ad121f
Summary
Changing the SSID of a Wi-Fi hotspot created through the graphical
network settings does not persist reliably. The hotspot connection
profile can have its connection ID changed, and other settings appear
editable, but the SSID reverts to its previous value when the
configuration is regenerated. Attempts to modify the SSID have also
coincided with repeated NetworkManager crashes.
Steps to reproduce
Create a Wi-Fi hotspot using the graphical network settings.
Observe that the system automatically creates a connection profile and
may generate a password.
Change the hotspot's SSID and apply the change.
Inspect the NetworkManager connection profile and the Netplan-generated
configuration.
Attempt to activate or modify the hotspot again.
Expected behavior
The selected SSID should be stored persistently in the authoritative
configuration, survive configuration regeneration, and be used whenever
the hotspot is activated. Modifying the SSID should not crash
NetworkManager.
Actual behavior
The connection profile can be named EDUP, and the SSID can temporarily
appear to change. However, the Netplan configuration retains the
previous SSID, maci-ESPRIMO-P720.
The relevant file is:
/etc/netplan/90-NM-29717496-789e-48dd-85e6-882e166b1d9b.yaml
Its Wi-Fi access-point entry still uses the previous SSID. Netplan
consequently generates a NetworkManager keyfile under
/run/NetworkManager/system-connections/ containing:
ssid=maci-ESPRIMO-P720
This explains why the previous SSID reappears after regeneration. The
generated file under /run is not the persistent configuration source.
During repeated SSID modification attempts, NetworkManager also
terminated with a core dump. The journal reported:
src/core/settings/nm-settings-utils.c:103: assertion failed: (<dropped>)
The process terminated with signal 6 (SIGABRT). The failure was observed
multiple times while experimenting with connection modifications and
hotspot activation.
Additional observations
The hotspot itself operates normally when its SSID is left unchanged.
Deleting and recreating the hotspot through the graphical interface can
generate a new password, suggesting that the connection profile is
created or regenerated automatically.
Renaming the connection profile does not resolve the SSID persistence
problem.
sudo netplan --debug generate completes successfully and reports that
the configuration is valid. Its debug output identifies the old SSID as
the configured access point.
The precise cause of the NetworkManager assertion failure has not been
established. It is not yet proven whether the crashes and the SSID
persistence issue share the same root cause.
Request
Please investigate the interaction between Netplan's NetworkManager
integration and NetworkManager connection-profile updates for Wi-Fi
access points.
In particular:
Why does the SSID in the persistent Netplan configuration remain
unchanged when the hotspot is modified through the graphical interface?
Is the generated connection profile being treated as editable even
though its source configuration will overwrite the change?
Can the repeated NetworkManager assertion failure during connection
modification be reproduced and corrected?
The issue is reproducible in the described environment, while leaving
the SSID unchanged avoids the observed problem in normal hotspot use.
Additional journal logs and a backtrace from the core dump are available
if required.
